The Sullivan Settees

Spring/Summer 2004

 

I made these in the late spring and summer of 2004 to go with the Sullivan table that I hade made a few years earlier. I used all local birch and cedar with some ebony for the wedges in the through tenons. While these were highly labour intensive pieces they were a lot of fun to build; all the shaping of the parts made for more than a few shavings and some trips back and forth to the sharpening stones to keep keen edges on the planes and spokeshaves.

This is about as close to carving a chair as I will likely ever get. Truely, the amount of shaping whether with bandsaw, curved planes, spokeshaves, or rasps and files, amounted to moving as much wood as I have ever had to on any previous project. But I like to think that the results were worth the effort . . .
